Anzac Spirits

Say goodnight to the shellshocked battalion
Huddled lowly and meek on the floor

Say your prayers for the lives that lay broken
By the curse of this merciless war

Our children cry for their fathers
Our mothers cry for their sons

And our hearts cry out as the Last Post reminds us
That war cannot ever be won

Cross your fingers for Lovers returning
Cross your hearts and hope never to die

Keep your promises brief but enduring
As you set sail with the tears in your eyes

And may God be your constant companion
As you take everyday as it comes

Don’t despair when you’re tired and weary
For you can’t end what you’ve never begun.
